Nearly 15 years ago, we bought the campground as a couple wanting a ‘simpler’ life away from the hustle & bustle of our previous jobs as a bus mechanic and a nurse in the Chicagoland suburbs. We had travelled the Midwest camping at equestrian campgrounds with our horses, and loved the Shawnee National Forest the best! The scenery, rock formations, waterfalls, forest, it was just un-matched in our travels. We found Hayes Canyon Campground by word-of-mouth inquiring about horse campgrounds for sale in the Shawnee, and bought from the original builders of the campground who were retiring. After owning the camp for 5 years we were blessed with a baby daughter, followed by 3 more children in the next 3 years. Our young children have been fortunate to have many adopted surrogate ‘grandparents’ who have watched them grow up here on the campground. Riding their bicycles, peddling home-make cookies and random rock collections, wading in the creeks, talking to friends and strangers alike from all over, and loving on countless hundreds of campers’ dogs 😊.
